Dear Petersburgers! Congratulations on the birthday of our beloved city!

​On 27th of May St.Petersburg will celebrate its 316th anniversary.

On May 27, 1703 by order of Peter the Great a new city was founded on the banks of the Neva River.​ On this day Peter the Great had laid the foundation stone in the footing of Peter and Paul fortress on Zayachy Island.

​St. Petersburg was built as a capital of the Russian state, its industrial, scientific, and political center. It remained the capital of the Russian Empire from 1712 to 1918.

St. Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, has the richest historical heritage which belongs not only to our country, but to the whole world. Since its foundation, St. Petersburg has been developing as a multinational city, and its inhabitants have carried through the centuries a special spirit of unity and cohesion. In the northern capital, people respect the cultural and religious traditions of all nations.

In 1714 a first public museum was open in Russia: The Kunstkamera.
In 1724  the Petersburg Academy of Sciences was founded.
In 1914 by order of Nicholas II the city was renamed Petrograd.
In 1924, the city became known as Leningrad.
On May 8, 1965, Leningrad was awarded the official title “Hero City” for​ heroism and the courage of its defenders during the Great Patriotic War.
The historical name of St. Petersburg was returned to the city on September 6, 1991.
