«This Experience Changed My Perception of Other Countries and Education, Broadened My Horizons, and Prepared Me for New Challenges»

Olga Zvereva, a third-year student in the Linguistics program at the Institute of Language Communications and Psychology, shares her experience participating in an academic mobility program after recently returning from a semester-long internship at University of Saint Joseph (Macau, China).

Olga Zvereva: «I learned about the opportunity to study abroad through the academic mobility program almost a year before the study began. From the moment we were informed that students were being recruited, I knew for sure that I would go. During the preparations for the trip, I had doubts: «How can I leave my life in St. Petersburg for six months? What if it’s difficult and I don’t succeed?». But now, after a semester has passed, I don’t regret for a second that I decided to participate in this program.

The past spring semester in Macau was an amazing experience for me, full of discoveries both academically and culturally. To be honest, I chose Macau because China is a promising direction, the university's website seemed user-friendly and contained all the necessary information for me, and the university's design was quite appealing. As it turned out, the university truly maintains a high standard and provides quality education, the teachers know their stuff, and the classrooms are equipped with all the necessary modern technology. Besides classes, students have opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities such as festivals, open mic events, and join interest-based clubs.

Education

University of Saint Joseph offers students a wide range of courses taught in English across various fields, including business, humanities, and technology. Every student can find suitable subjects for themselves. My educational experience was rich and beneficial. I immersed myself in a completely new environment and encountered educational standards that were radically different from our own. The first period was challenging—at the very least, getting used to a foreign language and the various accents of teachers and classmates. However, once I adapted to the routine and blended into the flow, it became easier, and I felt even more inspired to achieve new heights.

Teachers pay proper attention to each student. All topics are studied in great detail and examined «from within».

Cultural Immersion

Not only is education important in the academic mobility program, but also immersion in a unique cultural environment. This was my first individual trip abroad, including my first trip to East Asia. Macau has a special atmosphere; I would describe it as a separate world where Portugal and China blend together. The university is located in the northern part of Macau, which features colorful Chinese streets. Since Macau is a separate region bordered by the South China Sea to the south and a large iron fence to the north at the border with China, I always felt safe even at night, which was new for me. That part of me that loves to travel and immerse myself in authentic atmospheres rejoiced when I went for aimless walks or bought local food. China and Asia are an entirely different world that you encounter like locals because you’re going there not for vacation but to study and gain experience.

Life and Communication

Macau is «Western» China. The region is a former Portuguese colony, and there are many students from around the world, so there was plenty of communication. Interaction, life experiences, and new acquaintances are probably the main lessons learned during my studies here. Life in Macau also provided me with opportunities to explore other parts of Asia due to its convenient location. I was able to visit Hong Kong and Tokyo during my holidays, and that is something I will never forget!

Preparation for the Future

To all students who are unsure about going abroad or are just planning, I would like to say that the opportunity to study abroad through an exchange program is definitely a significant step in your life. Studying in Macau not only teaches you academically from a different perspective and refreshes your mind, but it can also be a great addition to your portfolio: the experience of studying in a country like China will stand out prominently. In Macau, in a new environment, you will acquire many useful skills. Personally, I learned to work and study in a multicultural setting and to adapt flexibly to new conditions.
