The siege of Leningrad began 83 years ago - 900 long days filled with hunger, cold, bombing and fierce fighting. St. Petersburg honor memory of the Siege of Leningrad’s victims on September 8, 2024
The heroic deeds/feats of defenders and citizens of the city always remain for forever as an example of greatest courage, fortitude and love for Motherland in world history. Leningrad was the first city at whose walls Nazi were stopped in summer of 1941 and which they didn’t conquer. The Battle for Leningrad became the longest one in the history of the Second World War.
Despite the heavy defeat this city continued living and fighting: more than 200 factories were working where were being produced about 150 military productions, the population were sending troops to the frontline and treating injured one. The people of Leningrad kept the cultural wealth safe, not only factories and hospitals continued working but also theaters and libraries.
The contribution of the people of Leningrad to the Great Victory is inestimable. The defense of Leningrad was an essential prerequisite for the success of the defense of Moscow, the victory at Stalingrad and the liberation of the occupied regions of the USSR and Europe.
In memory of the victims of the siege of Leningrad, a noon shot will be fired from the Naryshkin Bastion of the Peter and Paul Fortress. Solemn mourning ceremonies and actions will be held in different districts of the city. Museums, libraries, theaters and concert halls have prepared special thematic projects.
