Portugal and Las Vegas: What an Exchange Internship in Macau Looks Like

06 February 2025

More than 40 foreign universities are currently willing to accept our students to participate in academic mobility programs. The students from Saint Petersburg University of Management Technology and Economics, who have just returned from studying at universities in Belarus, Vietnam, China, and Thailand, share their internship experiences.

Yulia Khrushcheva, a third-year student of the Institute of Management and Information Technologies, shares her impressions on studying abroad. She is currently completing an internship at the University of Saint Joseph in Macau, China.

«It’s been a month since I started my exchange program in Macau, and the experience is incredible! In the first few days, I was a bit shocked by cultural differences, realizing I was in a completely different country. Macau is a unique city that merges Chinese and Portuguese cultures together. Here you can find historical buildings and ancient architecture of both China and Portugal. At the same time, it is the city of contrasts: alongside historic streets, you’re surrounded by bustling metropolis and luxurious districts reminiscent of a mini Las Vegas. You can try both traditional Chinese and Portuguese cuisine, stroll through Chinese markets, or visit fancy shopping malls.

The main reason why I chose Macau was the opportunity to fulfill my childhood dream – to attend a Chinese New Year parade and celebrate the holiday in China. This is one of the grandest celebrations here: streets are decorated with figures representing the Chinese zodiac, fairs with Asian snacks and souvenirs are held, and at the end of January, large-scale parades take place. I was lucky to attend one and see everything with my own eyes.

Education in Macau has its own unique features. One of the most striking differences is the strong emphasis on teamwork. Every subject includes group projects where we have to research a given topic and present our findings at the end of the semester. Special attention is given precisely to the fact that students work together. I’d also like to note that all the professors speak clear and fluent English, which really helps in understanding the material.

Macau is a fascinating city with its unique history and culture, very different from Russia. I’m glad to have the chance to explore world cultural differences while receiving an international education.»
