International Translation Day at the Department of Linguistics and Translation Studies

Students of the Department of Linguistics and Translation Studies, future linguists-translators, took part in a series of events dedicated to the International Translation Day, which is annually celebrated on September 30.

On September 21, a master class was held for the first-year students “Translator: mediator or facilitator?”. The first-year students get valuable information from a professional translator, associate professor of the Department of Linguistics and Translation Studies Anna Bordanova, what is unique about their chosen profession, why translators needs to constantly improve and expand their horizons, and how to become successful in their professional career.

Anna Bordanova also touched upon a description of the opportunities that artificial intelligence provides in translation practice. Anna Bordanova's story touched the students and aroused their keen interest, as evidenced by numerous questions and a lively discussion during the master class.

On September 26, an interactive game “World of Translation” was organized for the third-year students. The students tried to write poems in English, analyzed poetic works, and created a new discursive context for quotes and popular expressions.

On September 27, Anastasia Soldatikhina, a graduate of our university, head of the production department of the translation company Alphabet LLC, spoke to the second-year students. The meeting was dedicated to the real everyday life of a translator, tasks and ways to solve them, and the prospects for the development of translation activities.

The fourth-year students had the opportunity to get acquainted with translation educational projects, with opportunities to make a start in a career as a translator, while attending a conference at the Russian State Pedagogical University named after. A. I. Herzen “Challenges, opportunities, prospects for translation and training of translators in modern social, political and economic realities.”

On September 28, fourth-year students took part in the linguocultural tournament “Culture vs Language”, during which students demonstrated not only their proficiency in German, Spanish, Chinese or French, but also erudition, resourcefulness and artistry.

To summarize, it should be noted that the main goal of the events dedicated to the International Translation Day is not only to develop students’ motivation to learn foreign languages and improve professional translation skills, but also to emphasize versatility and creativity in the translation profession, constant self-development, self-control, impartiality, respect and tolerance.
